Projection videography

For this project I wanted to create a fashion narrative for editorial purposes. Due to COVID-19 I had to resort to using myself again, however creating 3 different looks in the video for added interest I feel I was able to showcase my wig styling and makeup skills. My father was able to take the video footage under my guidance. I was able to find some interesting projection shots form YouTube that people have uploaded for the purpose of free projector footage for artistic projects. I was inspired by video director David Fincher who uses translucent visuals to indicate a point of interest in his work. I felt this would help me divulge into videography for a different approach to how a portfolio is normally showcased. I had to paint a black backdrop for some of the footage as in most shots I didn’t want my shadow showing through the backdrop. Having the room dark so the projector was clear and strong helped narrate my conceptual art piece. My father was able to take a multitude of shots of me that I then gave to a video editor to put together. My other inspiration for the video was Miss Fames cosmetic champagne video as it showcased projection shots and edgy makeup looks. The entire video footage to do took around 4 days to complete and also a constant dialogue with the video editor so we were both in the same vision.

I feel the overall concept was strong, however I could have used better angles in my videography therefore giving more depth to my work. The concept behind the fashion video is open to interpretation therefore, allowing the audience to analyse it however they like. I’m really happy with the tension in the acting in the video as well as the projection shots. If I was to do this again I would use models for added interest however due to COVID-19 I had to use myself . Taking inspiration from David Fincher and Miss Fame I was able to create my own take on projection videography. I feel this video project has elevated my portfolio development as it’s opened me to new ways of creating makeup concepts other than just photography. I feel the music in the final video is also effective as I wanted something sharp but also fast paced so it keeps the viewers interested. The song I picked was ‘Waiting for the stars by Vitalic’.
